Scripture Reading
Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Insight on the Word
The word blessed literally means “how happy.” That is, how happy are those who walk in obedience to the law of the Lord. How happy are those who fulfill the purpose in life, for which God has created them (Rev. 4:11). When we delight in the law of the Lord, we live a life that is fruitful, without the decay, and in fact whatever we do prospers. Obedience to God’s Word always brings a rich and fruitful Christian life (John 15:1-8). While some have over emphasized prosperity, the truth remains: material prosperity is as much the will of God as soul and body health (Joshua 1:5-9; 1 Samuel 2:7-8; 3 John 1:2).
The Word of God is the life’s blood of the Christian life. Without commitment and obedience to it we are complete failures. But this is not the way of the righteous. We: 1) Delight in the Word of God (Psalm 1:2). 2) Meditate in it day and night (Psalm 1:2). 3) Consecrate ourselves to obey it (Psalm 1:1). 4) Make it our rule of life and conduct (James 1:22-27). 5) Make it our standard of faith and religion (2 Tim. 3:16-17). 6) Read it to gain knowledge and wisdom (Matthew 24:15; Ephes. 3:4; Rev. 1:3). And 7) Feed on it to grow spiritually (1 Peter 2:1-3; Romans 10:17).
Today, make it a point to walk in the counsel of God’s Word. As we do we have God’s promise that: “whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
Speak the Word — As I follow the counsel of the Lord I prosper! (Psalms 1:1-3)
