Scripture Reading
James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
Insight on the Word
We lack when we come up short in any area of our lives. The good news is whatever we lack in the area of wisdom, which has to do with cleverness, skill, and scientific knowledge, God promises to liberally (or bountifully) supply.
Wisdom is greatly needed and in Scripture wisdom is displayed in: the ability of Christ (Matthew 13:54), prophetic anointing (Luke 11:49), Godly training (Luke 2:40,52), human education (Acts 7:22), an anointing to speak (1 Corinthians 2:7), a Divine gift of wisdom (1 Corinthians 12:8), human philosophy and religion (Galatians 1:14), ministerial ability (Ephesians 1:8), Heavenly wisdom (James 3:17), and revelation (2 Peter 3:15).
Here in this passage, James gives us six secrets of receiving wisdom from God. First, we are to be consciousness of our “lack.” Second, we must actually “ask of God.” Third, we are to have the attitude that God “giveth to all men liberally.” Fourth, know that God “upbraideth not.” Fifth, accept the promise of God that: “it shall be given.” And Sixth, let our prayer be one that “ask in faith, nothing wavering.”
For what task do you need God’s wisdom? This day why not attempt what you cannot do? Revisit an earlier failure and try again. But, not in your own strength, ask God for His wisdom and knowledge. Believe that you receive, don’t waver, and trust God to give you wisdom knowing that He has promised: “it shall be given.”
Speak the Word — In faith, I ask for wisdom and God gives liberally! (James 1:5)
