Scripture Reading
Proverbs 2:1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
Insight on the Word
How do we find the knowledge of God? Here are eight directives from God’s Word:
- Receive the Word of God; (v. 1)
- Hide God’s commandments; (v. 1)
- Incline your ear to wisdom;(v. 2)
- Apply your heart to understand;(v. 2)
- Cry after knowledge; (v. 3)
- Lift your voice to understand; (v. 3)
- Seek knowledge as if seeking silver; (v. 4)
- Search for knowledge as hidden treasure. (v. 4)
Acquiring God’s knowledge is not for the slothful or non-committed. Indeed acquiring God’s knowledge takes commitment and dedication. There must be an attitude of reception. We must make an effort to listen. The desire to know God’s Word must be held very precious in our hearts. It should be looked upon as a hidden treasure that must be found. What we hear and what we find must be applied to our heart in order that we understand. It is not just a knowing of God’s knowledge and truth but an application of that truth to our every day lives. In life knowledge is valuable but experience is invaluable!
Let there be no doubt, if we apply ourselves in these eight directives God promises: “Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.”
Speak the Word — I apply my heart to understand and I will find the knowledge of God! (Proverbs 2:5)
