Psalm 136:1 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Insight on the Word
The mercy of God can be described as the expression of God’s kindness, loyalty and devotion to us, which is based on His Covenant promises. God’s mercy is as everlasting as His Word, about which Jesus said: “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. “ (Matthew 24:35)
In this 136th Psalm, God’s mercy is connected with a number of wonderful blessings and powerful expressions of miraculous power. Miracles like:
- Great wonders; “To him who alone doeth great wonders:” (Psalm 136:4)
- Wisdom – “To him that by wisdom made the heavens:” (Psalm 136:5)
- Creation – “To him that stretched out the earth above the waters:” (Psalm 136:6)
- Mighty deliverance – “To him which divided the Red sea into parts:” (Psalm 136:13)
- Destroy enemies – “overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea:” (Psalm 136:15)
- Guidance – “To him which led his people through the wilderness:” (Psalm 136:16)
- Always remembering – “Who remembered us in our low estate:” (Psalm 136:23)
- Redemption – “And hath redeemed us from our enemies:” (Psalm 136:24)
- Supplying needs – “Who giveth food to all flesh:” (Psalm 136:25)
And after everyone of these mighty acts of God the Psalmist adds: “for his mercy endureth for ever.” No wonder this Psalm is concluded with: “O give thanks unto the God of heaven:” (Psalm 136:26)
The God of the Bible is the same today! He still displays his wondrous mercy for us with great displays of his power. No matter what we may face give God thanks, “for his mercy endureth for ever.”
