As we draw closer to our upcoming time of corporate prayer and fasting, I want to share three biblical reasons to seriously consider entering into this season with us. This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list—Scripture gives us many reasons to pray and fast—but these are three strong, foundational reasons as you prepare your heart to join us January 11–14.![]()
1️⃣ Jesus fasted.![]()
In Matthew 4 and Luke 4, we see Jesus baptized in water and filled with the Holy Spirit. Immediately afterward, the Spirit led Him into the wilderness for a time of prayer and fasting lasting forty days. When Jesus returned, Luke 4:14 tells us He came back “in the power of the Spirit.” Jesus is our example. If He entered into prayer with fasting, then we should give serious thought to doing the same.![]()
2️⃣ Jesus said, “When you fast.”![]()
In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches on three spiritual practices: when you give, when you pray, and when you fast. He didn’t say if—He said when. Scripture gives us liberty regarding how long or how often we fast, but it makes clear that fasting is a normal part of the believer’s life.![]()
3️⃣ The Heroes of the faith fasted.![]()
🔸Moses fasted in God’s presence.
🔸David fasted in repentance and intercession.
🔸Daniel fasted for understanding and revelation.
🔸Esther fasted for deliverance.
🔸Ezra and Nehemiah fasted for guidance and burden.
🔸The apostles fasted for direction and leadership.
🔸Paul fasted often as an act of consecration and spiritual discipline.![]()
So as we approach our nights of prayer and fasting—January 11–14 at 6 PM—I want to encourage you to consider stepping in with faith and expectation. Give the Lord something to work with. I truly believe He will move mightily in your life during this time of dedication and consecration.![]()
God bless, - A.J.
