Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Insight on the Word
In this second prophecy by Jesus in the book of Acts, Jesus gives the disciples the good news of the coming power of the Holy Spirit. The Greek word translated power is “dunamis;” and it means inherit power capable, of reproducing itself like a dynamo. This power is never diminished. When we access this God given power, it is not depleted. For any need in life, there is always a full supply just waiting to be tapped into (2 Peter 1:3).
What is this power to be used for? Well, the Spirit-filled life is indeed a life of blessing for we the believers. It is an exciting journey in which we can call upon God for our personal needs at any time. But this power is not for our needs only but also for the needs of others. And most importantly the need of salvation in other peoples lives. (John 3:1-7)
Having received this power we are to be witnesses. We are to tell of the love, grace, and mercy of the Lord Jesus, to a lost and dying world. How do we tell? It starts right at home. The great commission and gospel benefits were to be worldwide, not to the Jews only, or even for the first century only. Jesus spoke of “Jerusalem,” “Judaea,” “Samaria,” and the “uttermost part of the earth.” For the disciples this would be like saying: our town, our county, our state, our nation and our world. This includes all people, of all races, everywhere they are! Indeed witnessing starts right in our own home and spreads out from there to everyone we meet. (Mark 16:15-20)
Today make a conscience effort to talk to someone about God and His love. As you do, know that you will not be alone or powerless in your witness of Christ, for the promise of Jesus is: “ye shall receive power!”
Speak the Word — I am endued with power to be a witness for Christ! (Acts 1:8)
